The methodology adopted in the paper is doctrinal research approach wherein relevant data collected was reviewed and the findings brought out. The paper examines the types of cybercrimes prevalent in Nigeria, international conventions approach and other jurisdictional practices with a view to abreast the application of legal framework of cybercrimes both in the Nigerian context and international community. The application of ICT covers every facet of human life and that has led to the birth of unanticipated rates of crimes coming in a borderless form. The people across the globe are technologically transformed to the extent that life depends on technology. The transformation of Information and communication technology (ICT) in today’s live has become a blood and bone relationship. Cybercrime involves using computers and internet by individuals to commit crime. This Study focuses on the legal framework prohibiting Cybercrimes in Nigeria. The position of Nigerian law will also be examined and its inadequacies will be highlighted, and lessons from other jurisdictions on better ways to combat these crimes and torts will be extracted, resulting in recommendations. The position of other jurisdictions specifically the United States of America, the United Kingdom, India, and Kenya will be analysed. The international position will be looked at in respect of responsibilities of states, jurisdiction, and international cooperation, treaties and conventions dealing with cybercrimes and cybertorts. This thesis aims at examining the response of legal systems to these crimes and torts. In light of these, States have recognized the pertinent need to have in place laws combating cybercrimes and cybertorts. Recent global happenings including, ransomware and malware attacks, cybersquatting, cyberbullying and cyber harassment, cyberwarfare, and child pornography have shown how these actions affect the private and financial life of citizens as well as the economic development and international reputation of states.

On the other hand, cybertorts are torts which are committed on computer systems or a network of computer systems such as trespass to chattels, conversion, cyber defamation, negligent enablement of cybercrimes, etc.

Cybercrimes or computer-oriented crimes include but are not restricted to the hacking of computers or computer networks, cyberstalking, cybersquatting, child pornography, computer-related fraud, identity theft, impersonation, and cyberterrorism. This has afforded the opportunity for these tools to become the objects and media through which crimes and torts are committed.

States have also taken advantage of these modern technologies. The dawn of the cyber age and cyberspace inclusive of computers, computer networks, the internet, information technology, and virtual reality, means much of a person’s personal and financial life is transacted over the cyberspace.
